How you gain knowledge on a subject you want to know more about

Hi!

I am very curious to know how you research certain topics of interest. What resources (specifically online) do you use to gather more knowledge on a subject?

Some obvious examples are: YouTube, Google, Etc

If you use google or YouTube you can search using your keywords/anchor text to find out the best solution.

I read more about the topics of interest. If there is a free online course, then I signed up with them.

I use Google to get references and I try to find the book or the source itself to get some more info about a certain topic that I’m researching about.

you may also talk to people who already know about the topic… sometimes opinions and povs are better than straight read from books and papers

That’s incredibly general. It all depends on what you want to know. A basic search query can get you a bunch of information, but then you need to narrow it down from there. I kind of like to follow “breadcrumbs of scholarship,” meaning I consult an article, essay, or book on the topic, and then I go to their reference sections and see which scholarship they have consulted and referred to in their work, and then proceed to do the same following through each new source and their list of sources. It can be an incredibly wide web to cast, but you get a really well-rounded understanding of the scholarship in that particular field. I often used this method when writing my Master’s thesis. It can work the same with online resources and less “academic” pursuits. For example, Wikipedia is not a quotable, reputable source, but it is a wealth of information and always has a good reference section to source material. And then when it comes to learning software or tools, I’m a fan of hands on tutorials.
