I am trying to start over with my online presence. Originally I had a portfolio/business site because I used to design websites during high school and community college. This was also before blogs really took off, so the only items I had on that site was a link to my resume, gallery of past work, a blurb about myself and contact information.
But today I am focusing on a general corporate communications career (with an emphasis on public relations writing and social media) and I want to create a website that isn’t exclusively about web design. I use twitter, I am getting involved with a variety of online communities, and I am using profiles such as linkedin to help network with other communication professionals.
I would like to create a hub for myself and perhaps the easiest route would be to create a Wordpress blog or use a template. However I need to figure out what my content should be besides a link to my resume and a short bio about myself. I don’t want the blog to take up most of the design, because then that would pressure me to write about topics and it would distract visitors from important information about myself.
Form follows function. What do you want to display on your site? What do you want users to do on your site? Answering those questions goes a long way to helping you decide what kind of site you want.
I’m a bit confused here. You write:
and at the same time write:
If you don’t want to write about topics, then you don’t need a blog. But if you’re involved with social networking and such, you may well need a blog. Having a Wordpress site without a blog, forum, or so forth is, IMO, pointless.
When you decide what you do and don’t want your site to display, and what kind of involvement you want to have with your site and its users, then you’ll know what direction in which you want to go.
I like wordpress to design all of my websites. Very easy to use once you get the hang of it, whether you want to blog or post about a niche. Either can be done.
