How To Improve?

Greetings–

I’ve been in web development for a few years now (mostly Java EE). I love web development, and want to be a better web developer. Because I’m the only web developer at my company, I can’t learn much from my colleagues, so I do a lot of reading and personal projects in my spare time. However, I don’t think I’m going to learn anything truly practical this way.

Best practices only become evident once you understand why they’re considered best practices, and that can only come from experience. I do get some experience from working on my personal projects, but again, I can’t learn much when I’m the teacher. So, I’m looking for suggestions on ways to improve. I’ve considered hopping on to an open-source project, but I always conclude that such projects really aren’t going to benefit from contributions from web developers that have never worked on an open-source project before.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you all so much for the insight you always provide.

Hi,

I suggest you try to push yourself.
Find something you’ve always wanted to do, and do it!
I find that the best way to turn, it through trail and error.

If that doesn’t suit your needs, just examine other sites, and learn from those.

Good luck to you.
