How to choose the right domain name for SEO

Hi All

I am wanting to choose a website name that is good in terms of SEO, what tools can I use and how do I use them to decide which is the best name. I am aware of google keywords but not really sure the best way to use it to make my decision or if there are other things I should do.

In other words if I was trying to decide between calling my site footballprediction.co.uk or footballforecast.co.uk and I then use google keywords to get the following information:-

Football Forecast - (Global Monthly Searches = 3,600) (Local Monthly Searches = 880)
Football Prediction - (Global Monthly Searches = 14,800) (Local Monthly Searches = 2,400)

Is it as simple as choosing footballprediction.co.uk because it has higher global and local monthly searches.

Also is there an easy way to determine whether this is a decent size market to target and worth spending my time setting up a site for in terms of then making an income from advertising?

Any advise would be appreciated, if you know of any useful articles about the subject feel free to point me in that direction. Thanks.

Another thing to consider is what the competition looks like for each of those search phrases. If the sites that come up for “football forecast” look a bit flaky whereas the ones for “football prediction” look rock solid, you might be better steering your site towards the forecast name - if you’ve got a better chance of getting to the top, it doesn’t necessarily matter if the audience is a bit smaller.

By flaky do you mean when looking at the competition do I think I can make a better site with better content and more user friendly? Why does it not matter about the smaller audience and would you say from the numbers quoted that it is a big or small audience?

Basically I want to know how I can guage whether it is a big enough audience for me to target as I am looking at the spending the next year developing a site and want it to be worth it.

Yes, that’s pretty much exactly what I meant by ‘flaky’

What I meant by it not mattering about a smaller audience was…

If you’re up against really stiff competition for a query that gets 100,000 searches, you might only get 2% of the traffic from those searchers = 2,000 visitors.
If there’s relatively little competition for a query that gets 10,000 searches, you might get as much as a quarter of the traffic from those searchers = 2,500 visitors.
So although 10 times more people are searching for the more popular term, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll get more visitors by targeting that term. Note - those numbers are pulled out of the air (or somewhere else) and may not bear any reflection on reality. As to whether it’s a big audience, that really depends on the nature of your site.

You do know that having your keywords in your domain really doesn’t matter these days, right? It’s about brand marketing - and if you follow Matt cutts, he recently talked about “keywords” in your domain.

When you focus on low-searched keywords - you open a wide hole for search ranking results. Why? Long tail keywords tend to rank more easily than highly competitive keywords - since less people are aiming to rank for those keywords, and the competiting isn’t as fierce.

In other words - why do you feel its important to include your keyword in your domain name?

Choose the .com domain and which keyword choose or add on your domain name on which high traffic on this keyword…

Just as a recommendation, I’d advise you watch this: YouTube - How important is it to have keywords in a domain name?

keyword domain is not the main factor (although it help speed up the process) if you are doing SEO for a keyword as most of the online searches are broad based searches. Seldom people use exact match searches. So go for the lower competitive keyword domain and as the popularity of your site grows. You can always target the other keyword.
