How to achieve this in Sketch?

Hello for the first time!
I would like to ask you for help.

Here’s the picture to illustrate what I want to do:

I have two objects (1) I want to put them at each other (2) and achieve a result similar to (3) but without using additional stroke around a circle, as it is made now (just to show you a result I want to have).

Basically I want to have all navy blue elements transparent. I tried to use boolean operation but without any success. I would appreciate a lot a mini tutorial how can I achieve this effect.

Oh I’m using Sketch, but also have a trial version of Illustrator (prefer Sketch though).
