Difference between SEO and SMO
I bet you have already heard about SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Even though the second one is a new term, am sure you already know it. SMO stands for Social media marketing.
These two are today’s key Internet Marketing strategies. There are different approaches you might want to opt for each of these. The SEO and SMO strategies are very different from each other, even though the end result is the same – Traffic!
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

The traffic you receive from your SEO efforts is huge and consistent. You continue to receive the traffic based on your SERP (search engine rank positions). If you have higher ranks, you have huge traffic.
SEO is an ongoing activity that needs to be continuously performed to make sure you are on the top. In short SEO is a permanent fix to your search engine traffic.
SMO (Social Media Optimization)
You could identify SMO as a quick fix when compared to SEO. SMO is all about huge traffic spikes in short time, it does not require and wait time for the search engine bots to index your page. It directly fires your messages to the potential visitors.

Social media and SEO are complimentary to each other. It cannot be one of the two, it has to be both! When SEO marries SMO (we call it a perfect marriage), twins are born - High rankings and Huge traffic!
My view is that it depends on the what kind of website yours is. If you have a product related website, then it would be better to focus on SEO and if it is a site purely for attracting the visitors, then you an go on with SMO.
It’s important to work out early on what your main strategy for getting visitors is going to be, and how people are most likely to find your website. Is your site targeting things that people might search for (eg products, information) or is it more likely to attract people following links on other related sites, tweets, Facebook likes and so on (eg humour, gossip)? That will help you decide whether to focus more on SEO or SMO, or whether you need to balance the two pretty evenly. There’s not so much point in targeting social media for a serious corporate business site, or for the kind of information where people will go straight to Google … but equally there’s not so much point in targeting key words in Google if people aren’t searching for them.

SEO
- low cost
- good in the long term
- highly competitive
- provides backlinks
SMO - low cost
- highly competitive
- no backlinks
- organic traffic
Going through above points you can understand the purpose and impact of both the strategies.
SEO- un paid getting result from organic through the search engine. but this is ROI. to result it will take time.
SEM- need to pay. its instant result but its not standed.
My understanding is that the main point of SMO is to get traffic from sources other than search engines. If that’s correct then the answer to this question must be SEO.
There is not the question as one is better than other. even if you would like to really put it that way, to chose between SEO and SMO, it would depend of your content. There is content that goes well in social media and there is content that goes well for SEO.
But I think you should try both. Do keywords research, On-Page search engine optimization, off-page seo and in addition try getting some social media accounts up and running to build a user base. Search engines now pick-up signals from social media also, so it would help you get higher rankings.
