How might the Boston Globe have done this photo-to-graphic mugshot transformation?

I want to add some faces to a website and would prefer something like that to simply having photographs. I think they look good, and I like the consistent look to them (something I may not be able to achieve even if I could get the people I need in the same place on the same day).

Thanks.

There are sites out there where you can get your photo turned into a cartoon image (for avatars etc)–some free and some requiring a payment–which is a popular option these days. You can also hire artists to create the image for you … which I suspect is what the Globe did in this case.

I agree. It looks like that one was probably done by an actual artist.

If you search “turn yourself into a cartoon” you’ll find tons of sites for it. =)

Yeah there are vector illustrations for sure. No site or software could do this automatically, they have been created by hand.

It’s easy if you know what you’re doing. If you want to follow this avenue let us know and we can help you further (hopefully).

Simple. TRACE IT in AI. It takes DRAWING SKILLS, all good art does. No other way around it. But if I had to do this, and on a newspaper’s deadline. I’d proably create a standard color palette, take the photo into PS and posterize it/play with the levels. until the colors fit (not necessarily match… just fit) then either manually trace it or maybe live trace then adjust or delete the extra points that may have been generated.

Yea those are definitely vector graphics. You can get some good effects though with photoshop through using the filters mentioned by dresden_phoenix. It’s all a matter of how much time you are willing to invest.

For a design project, I asked a friend to do some graphic drawings on her tablet for me. She is a fantastic artist and illustrator. I’m not sure of her process, but it could easily have been done in the free Inkscape program. Turned out beautiful and fantastic…that’s how I would’ve done those illustrations.
