Is there a way to be able to compare the speed of two hosting companies accurately? I don’t want to compare their homepage but an identical web page on their web servers.
External tests like LoadImpact may help, then again I would not solely trust a third party system in my testing. Are you trying to accurately determine which one will be faster for you…?
Normally a few milliseconds here and there is not going to make a big difference though do remember your not always going to get an accurate answer.
Yes, I am thinking of moving a website for a client from their hosting provider to the one I normally use. I developed the site under my hosting account and then moved it when it was complete and at the time felt that the speed had reduced. Commercially this would be a good time to move the website but I would like to have concrete proof that my provider was faster. The reason is that I understand that Google looks more favourably on faster loading sites.

The influence will be minimal. The real issue is when sites take so long to load that visitors are frustrated. That’s what Google ultimately tries to do here, avoid upsetting its users by sending them to slow, almost unresponsive sites. At the end of the day, speed remains only one factor that Google takes into account, out of hundreds.
As long as you have 2 identical pages on 2 different servers, you could try using host-tracker.com and see how fast they load from tens of locations around the world.
Exactly. Google might favor speed but ultimately, you should be more concerned with speed for your visitors instead of placement on Google. The only way is to try out the host and see the speeds for yourself.
