How do you do this in Wordpress?

How do you “remove the link to the author archive”, so that your posts simply “output the author display name”.

Right now, if you hover over the post’s author name, it gives you extra information. I don’t want that.

How do you stop that process?

Can we see a link showing this? You probably need to edit the theme files to echo author name vs linking it.
