We needed to print out screenshots of our web page, so that’s what we did… we printed screen shots.

Another technique we did was make PDFs of the pages we needed printed fully.

I don’t know what GoogleMaps does. I’m glad those print out fine. Are you trying to print a page with a map or some sort of technical drawing? Foreground HTML images (in <img> tags) normally do print.

Aside from the total waste of ink. I think you are missing the point f web media… QUICK delivery of content is whats important. You have to ask yourself… why would my viewer WANT a blue gradient??? It’s a web page, not a poster or a brochure, (even if online it serves that function). That being said, if you really want your viewers to print their own brochures of your company info, assuming THEY want to do so… you could have a link to a PDF … everything is nice and tidy that way.

Quite. And any page that did print a huge coloured background would make itself very unpopular with visitors for using up all their colour ink!

Backgrounds don’t get included when printing, so you have to be careful to account for that. You can create a separate print style sheet if you like. (Perhaps there is another solution, but I’m not aware of it.)
