I find that when searching from any of my websites from my pc it can show a ranking of #1, on a different computer in the same office it shows #1 but on another computer in a different building the same site is #10.
Why is this?
How can i know what the correct ranking of my site is, i need to know this to optimize the site, i think i am number 1 for some of my sites but this cannot be so.
Search from here and try different locations

(results do vary by location)
Ranking is not static. It can vary depending on user habits very easily.
google has lots of datacenters. this might be the reason why you get different results in every different locations.
I now use Market Samurai for keyword research and it also keeps track of all the rankings for my keyword.(free trial) Another great tool is Raven Tools. Both links can be found in the second link below in my signature.
I have heard lot about this problem but have never faced but its true google have some 11 data center this error is due to that.
Better you clear the cache and history in your browser before you search. There may be fluctuations in result if the cache in your browser are not cleared regularly. As dvduval said you can use Google ad preview tool to get the most accurate results.
Keyword ranking differs from one browser to another. You can use google dance tool for getting accurate keyword ranking in google search engine.
it is a good way for getting accurate indication of Google Ranking…
Hey this google dance tool is something new to me…i will definitely try this.
The browser you use won’t make any difference - Google couldn’t care less whether you’re using IE, Firefox, Symbian or Mosaic, it will give you the same results. The only time you might see different results is if you’re logged into Google on one browser but not on another, because Google will alter its results based on what it knows about you and your searching habits.
I wouldn’t waste your time. Google is constantly spidering the web and updating its index. Yes, you might see slightly different results depending on which server it taps into at each precise moment, but you won’t learn anything useful from that, other than that search results are not 100% static. The days of the big Google Dance, when results fluctuated wildly, are long behind us.
