How can I get a windows system file?

My microsoft security essentials keeps flagging ntoskrnl.exe I tried using scannow to fix it, in case it’s a virus change. But scannow asks for my install CD, which I cant’ find. I think Sally Lightfingers, a troublesome guest, left with it

Besides that, scannow asks for an SP3 install disk. My install disk was SP2 and I upgraded over the net, so how could I have an SP3 disk?

Is there any other way to get a copy of the sp3 ntoskrnl.exe file so I can overwrite the dubious one?

I wrote emachines about getting a fresh install disk but they want twenty bucks for it and I’m short of cash this week. Besides, that would, again, be for an SP2 machine, since that was the version when I bought it. It would also take a while to get it and I want to correct this now in case it’s some weird virus aftereffect. I’ve run full system scans and nothing seems to be there now, but this file must have been changed. It still works but it worries me every time MSE flags it.

You could try torrenting an sp3 disk then using it to repair the file, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t be illegal seeing as you own a copy of windows

Unfortunately, I’m not on a router, and last time I tried port forwarding it didn’t work. Thanks, though. maybe there’s another source. Considering how often their stuff breaks and how many critical core files they have, Msoft should make those available. Six year old source disks tend to get lost at times

Do a search for “free dlls”. Usually you can find missing DLL that way on one of those DLL library sites. Microsoft does/did have SP3 standalone downloads but obviously that is just SP3 upgrade not the full Windows XP Install Disc - in some cases that will be enough and others not.

So, you’d trust some free site giving away core system DLLs not to be putting their own rootkits in things?

Personally, if my box was infected that deep–ntoskrnl.exe is the NT OS Kernel executable, not some minor driver–I would flatten and reinstall the thing anyhow.
