hello,
Google are using HTTPS as a ranking factor.
I notice sites like https://www.johnlewis.com are hiding the https:// part of their domain name.
How do I get rid of the https:// part of the domain name when having secure pages?
Thanks,
Matt.

It’s not that it’s hidden, it’s not there in the first place.
http://www.johnlewis.com/
Is the url you are looking at.
Why would you want to hide it? If people can see it’s secure it should reassure your visitors.
Well - I know if go to my website with HTTPS:// at the start an error message comes up saying I do not have the certificate for my website which is true.
If you go to https://www.johnlewis.com no error message comes up so they must have one but they are hiding it, I assume?
If I go to https://www.johnlewis.com I get redirected to http://www.johnlewis.com/
Presumably because https://www.johnlewis.com does not exist, so they configure a redirect for anyone who makes that mistake.
Oh I see - sorry about that.
Anyway… would you recommend getting HTTPS?
I was thinking of waiting a while until it is a more prominent part of google ranking factors. It is only a small factor at present.
It won’t hurt you. But may not be a necessity depending on the nature of the site.
It has been discussed previously in this thread, you may find some useful opinions there.
I don’t think it will ever be a major factor. The biggest factors will always be relevancy to the search term. Though in a competitive market where there are a number of similar sites, it may give you an edge over those without it.
