The wisdom of crowds?
I am developing a site that send out SMS messages on varying schedules to many people. I have been working on this on and off for well over a year and the naming kills me.
A MESSAGE can be what is sent, or the text part of a message or maybe even the message and when it will be sent and to whom.
At present I use SCHEDULE for the planned sendings, SCHEDULE-INSTANCE for a specific schedule item (eg Mon 14th 3pm). I have called the message text and the schedule-instance a TRANSMISSION.
As I am now completely rebuilding the system and adding in emails and IM etc life is becoming even more interesting.
COMMUNICATIONS is another possibility. Just wondering if anyone has any SPECIFIC terms to offer.
EG I like TEXT for the text part of a message but then text can also be a text.
Probably the ones that are causing me the most angst are TRANSMISSION (noun means the whole thing – message and SMS number, verb could be the act of sending and COMMUNICATION (new to the list not sure if it will be verb or noun).
Open to any wise ramblings that might suggest a naming structure that is not so bloody fluid – every word seems to possibly mean six things – apart from SMS!
