Help me with brainstorming...Need to develop a web application

I need your help, ideas and input in this, the brief is this below

The application must be aimed at a
tourists visiting London for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games it may be
anything from a website, a desktop (Adobe Air) application or a mobile
application, but must take into account the needs of the users group. The
application must include sound, images, (possibly video) and animation. The
application must be highly interactive. .

What type of applications comes to your mind…I’m comfortable in designing Xhtml/CSS, not too great at back end but can usually find my way round.
Good with Photoshop, Illustrator and a lil flash but basic.

Just wanted to brainstorm with u guys, if you were a tourist in London what type of interation would u like to see…

This is a university module, thanks in advance.

Thanks for all the ideas, I’ll be posting here as I start the development as well as the finished project and my final grade which won’t be known till February.

The hand in date for the first part is in 3 weeks, which is the sketches, storyboards, ideas.

The website itself is due in January.

Since we’re also going to be marked for videos, I thought I’d do a virtual tour, nothing high end because I don’t have the camera/tripod stand etc, but I saw I could make something with a normal digital camera and standing, rotating and shooting.

Also make some sort of trivial quiz with flash.

Wish me luck and thanks for the inputs

spikeZ had great feature suggestions. The only other thing I would add would be some images of each location so they could see the POV, making it easier to know they are there when they are driving themselves.

That is the entire brief? – what a lazy ass professor.

Open ended briefs like this, just scream laziness to me. There should at least be some specific, objective goals outlined. Pretty much make a web presence that could be useful to people visiting the the games. What a generic brief with lack of direction and creativity.

I’m not a lawyer, but if the school owns your work, than you may be able to use the logo within fair use laws regarding academic work.

Good one Spikez, I actually live in the borough hosting the games so quite familair with routes etc…and xhtmlcoder thanks, we talked about that today in class.

How about an app that charts where the venues are, the seating capacity, ticket availability and purchase, how long it would take to get from one venue to another and routes with sights along the way.

Or

How much it should cost in a taxi to get from venue A to venue B and the route the taxi should take.

or

Venue schematics and disable access provision?

maybe …

Well, since it’s a UK site/app it will will have to abide by the UK Web Accessibility Guidelines (partly based on WCAG). So if you use Flash and JavaScript you’ll have to make sure the content is still usable without those two technologies.

What the London 2012 promo video controversy causing epilepsy seizures due to strobe, and the 2012 logo resembling a CAPTCHA? Two good examples of how not to do things…

The application looks to be good one. Ideally, it should a web based application as tourists can be expected for all over the world. The application needs to have the events, venues, tickets availabity along with mode of purchase, time and date. Site map details in distance wise.

Lot more…

The logo they wouldn’t allow us to use in our project, a student wrote them saying it was for a project, they said “no, you cannot use it”

How about a universal translator for common questions people might want to ask like “where is the toilet” or “how much is that?” - might help people who can’t speak much English.

Another one would be a food locator - eg maps showing places to eat

Or a travel aid so poeple can look up transport options when travelling to/from game venues.

And don’t forget not all the games are happeining in London, so regional aids may go down well.

Your individual task is to design on paper an application aimed at providing
users with a high level of interaction. The application must be aimed at a
tourists visiting London for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games it may be anything from a website, a desktop (Adobe Air) application or a mobile
application, but must take into account the needs of the users group. The
application must include sound, images, (possibly video) and animation. The
application must be interactive. This part of the coursework is a paper-based prototype that is expected to include storyboards, prototype assets (images, examples of animation if ready). You must also give an explanation of what the application is expected to do and how the users will interact with it.

Your are expected to use Adobe Flash, illustrator, Photoshop and any other
appropriate software.
Assessment Criteria
Design Sketches (Total of 50% of marks)
• Must be comprehensive design ideas/drawings in one sketch book
(sketch book must be at least 30 pages)
Prototype design of application storyboards (Total of 50% of marks)
• Three A4 pages showing storyboards of the prototype application. 25%
• The storyboards must include explanations and descriptions of how the
application works and how the users will interact. 25%

That’s the whole brief, the other 50% is for the application

The application for this part of the application may either be a simulation or a working example. The application must have AT LEAST 8 PAGES.

I’ve spent the whole weekend, gathering ideas, writing down stuff, asking friends what they would like to see.

I would suggest calender of events application.

just watch out some site regarding your thinking, surely you ll get some brain storming ideas.
