Green, cheap, uk hosting?

hosting… i’m looking for something like what i’ve got now (£20 [~$32] exl. VAT per year , PHP, MySQL, FTP, email handling, 50mb webspace, 5gb bandwidth per month, based in the uk etc.) – but green.

maybe it being based in the uk doesn’t matter. not sure. would prefer it based in the uk.

anyone know of such a thing?

by green, i mean using entirely renewable sourced electricity of some sort.

thanks.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=green+uk+hosting ???

First link claims £10 a year.

That will simply not be cheap, if you want true green hosting.

I know that http://www.aiso.net/ is truly using solar power as opposed to just paying for wind/solar energy to be pumped in the grid to cover their usage (what most other hosts claiming to be green do).

i think that’s a mistake. in the meta description which appears in google’s listing, yes, it says what you’re saying. but on their site it’s £10 per month: http://www.ecowebhosting.co.uk/pricecomparison

oops, correction, on this page http://www.ecowebhosting.co.uk/webhosting it does say £10 per year.

ah, but that £10 per year is really restricted, e.g. no MySQL database, so no good. the next service up from that is £30 per year which does have MySQL.

second ah, their greeness is simply planting trees. they don’t use renewable sourced energy.

yup, i thought that might be the case.

yes, “just paying for wind/solar energy to be pumped in the grid to cover their usage” is what this one is doing for example: http://www.green-hosting.co.uk/how-green-hosting-works/index.html which is £60 per year. and the generators and hosting computers are in the US.

hmm, oh well, another idea down the pan.

this looks like the best so far but it’s bit pricey for what i want:

"Our hosting environment operates from a data centre running on solar power with a solar panel array capable of generating upto sixty kilowatt-hours of electricity each day.

We were the first and for a long while the only UK company (to our knowledge) offering hosting based in a data centre facility powered entirely by solar energy."

cheapest with database: £57.25/year http://www.ecologicalhosting.com/personal-hosting

that does sound green proper.

Dreamhost are “green” but they do it by buying carbon credits (their “greenness” is up to you to decide on). They cost US$97 a year, but you can get the first year for about $10 with some discount codes (all over the internet). You get unlimited databases and more disk space and bandwidth than you can shake a stick at. If you’re not willing to pay $97 after that first year, just cancel it and switch. Dreamhost aren’t in the UK, but that doesn’t seem to matter (I use them and it’s been excellent).

Other than pseudo-green things like this, I think you’ll find it pretty hard to find what you’re after for the price you want.

the http://www.ecologicalhosting.com/ one is actually in california; the actual servers that is.

yup looks like that’s absolutely right. oh well, worth an ask. thanks, and thanks for the info about dreamhost.

i’ve just found out http://www.aiso.net is the company which http://www.ecologicalhosting.com/ are using. which actually makes ecologicalhosting.com quite a good deal i think. the cheapest aiso option with a database is $14.95 monthly. the cheapest ecologicalhosting option with a database is £57.25/year which is about… $7.70 per month. you probably get much more from the cheapest aiso deal than the cheapest ecologicalhosting deal such as more bandwidth and space but i don’t really care about that. so that does make ecologicalhosting look not bad.

thanks.

Good luck for you. What I’m not sure about is if they are UK web hosts. I recommend you double check that

aiso.net are definitely not uk based. they’re entirely california based. ecologicalhosting.com are a uk based company but their servers are aiso’s. ecologicalhosting.com don’t have their own servers, they’re just reselling aiso’s. but ecologicalhosting.com are splitting it up smaller, finer graned.

the uk aspect of my initial hope/request was the weakest, least essential.

what i’m hoping is aiso can do the thing i’m asking about in the other thread i recently started asking about more than one domain name hosted by one hosting account (http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=658491). if they can this’ll be perfect for what i want. have emailed them, awaiting answer, fingers crossed. green hosting idea not down the pan yet. quite excited about it actually. i think it’ll be an excellent thing to offer clients.

If they have fast network in US I’m sure you will not have any problem with connection speed.
