General Site Organization for Member Area

Hi all,

The site I’m working on has a public and member area. I’m using a php login script to enter member area.

Would I be better off using a subdomain for the member area or should I just use www.domainname.com/member_area?

I’m not sure what the pros and cons are of this. If it matters, I will be implementing google apps but I should be able to tie this to the domain or subdomain, and it is independent of where the member area is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. I think this is the correct area for this thread. If not, please feel free to move

Many thanks!

I don’t see any major problem or disadvantage in putting all your member’s area web pages in a separate folder under your main domain name.

Obviously each of the member pages will have to first check if the user is legitimately logged in before displaying any content or processing any data.

I would also put an index.php or index.htm in the member’s area folder and its subfolders to redirect the user to your login page or to display an appropriate error message in case they “accidentally sticky beak” into those folders.
