SEO is a continuous process - you need to keep running to stand still. You might be able to get your site to #1 but your competitors will keep on with their SEO and will overtake you if you don’t carry on working at it.
In terms of what you need to do, have a read through the forum, particularly the orange ‘sticky’ threads at the top, and use the Search function if you have any specific questions - all the information and discussions you are likely to need are already there.
