Free Classifieds Websites

Hi,

I hope this is the right place to post this.
I already have a steadily growing free local classifieds site.
There are so many free classified sites on the net. Both local and global ones. Apart from the super popular ones (like Craiglist, Backpage) there are sites that get hundred thousands of visitors.

For eg:
USA: classifiedads.com, oodle.com, yakaz.com, recycler.com, geebo.com
UK: gumtree.com; pistonheads.com; vivastreet.co.uk; freeads.co.uk; loot.com
India: quikr.com; click.in; indialist.com; khojle.in, magicbricks.com

All of them provide the same service. Site functions, how they work, they are almost same.

So my question is how did they get to be so popular when they provide same service? Lets take India for eg, above mentioned Indian sites may not be “equally” popular but they still get huge amount of visitors judging by the alexa rank.

Was it their advertising?
Did they get any funding?
Am I missing some unique feature on each of those sites?

Is there anyone who can shed some light on this?

Thanks

For Craigslist, it was largely due to Sex-Trafficking and exploitation of females… :unamused:

Thanks for providing this list. I am really very sure your list will help many readers looking for best websites for Classifieds. I would love to add one more in this list and I am personally using this website from last few days.

Before this thread goes off-topic, may I just draw attention to the fact that the OP is asking specific questions about how the popular sites came to be successful.

This is not a place to post lists or recommend other sites.

In the case of Craiglist, it was because they were the first to provide a service that simply worked.

I guess that while the functionality is the same, there has been a lot of offline publicity and/or faster and more reliable searches than other sites… as well as funding form some big companies with lots of cash.

In some cases, they may have been popular classified newpapers which simply evolved to be online

But this is just my guess

thanks a lot for your valuable input
