Five questions from a student seeking a career in cyber security

Unsure if there are any people knowledgeable in the field here but here goes:

The college I am transferring to has two degrees I am first trying to decide on. ALSO, as far as cyber security is concerned, they have a graduate certification program that is CAE/IAE certified that you can take after you finish your computer-related bachelors.

I can either choose between Computer Information Systems (CIS) or Computer Science (CS) before I can do the certification, which do you recommend?

What kind of careers can be expected in the cyber security industry?

How’s the career-advancement opportunity? Is this more of a stagnant thing or can you work your way up to managerial positions?

What kind of entry-level options are available? Are there commonly internship opportunities in this field?
How’s the pay? Can you work your way up to a six figure salary and beyond?
Thank you all for your input, it is very appreciated.

I spent a good portion of my career in security. I had business cards with the title “Cyberspace Police”

Don’t care on the CIS vs CS degree. Either one can teach you useful stuff.

There are a ton of jobs in the area… I’ll list some that come to mind

  • Product engineering, you could be the security guy on a team building a product your company is going to sell
  • Central/IT security, you could be responsible for corporate policy on your company’s security issues
  • Product management, you could be in charge of deployment and management of security products (e.g A/V) or the security within other products your company uses (databases, supply chain, etc)
  • Incident management, you could be the guy that gets the 2AM call telling you that your company has been attacked and you need to manage the incident

Advancement is very dependent on the size of the company. In a big company sure there are management and 6-figure jobs. Be wary of “working your way up to managerial positions”, that is often the last thing you actually want to do!

Good luck…
