Exploiting Facebook Groups?

Something just occurred to me, those Facebook groups like “Join this if you like toasted cheese sandwiches” or “IF MR. BEAN WAS IN AVATAR HE WOULD LOOK LIKE THIS!!” can be made by anyone and often get a lot of fans / members. I suppose this would be a “black hat” marketing technique but one could easily either make their own group or just pay the owners of these groups $10-$50 (don’t think it would be too hard to get someone to accept a small amount of money) to post a status like “blah blah check out my website: www.example.com” which would plaster their site over 100,000+ peoples Facebook pages.

I’m not saying I’m interested in doing this, but am wondering if it is currently taking place and peoples thoughts on it. It seems like a pretty obvious way to spam advertise but I havn’t really seen any instances of it (then again I’m not a huge Facebook user either).

Facebook reaches into people’s every day lives so while it may work to blast message something here and there, in the long term that just isn’t going stick as people will “unfan” the group as quick as they join.

Ethical marketing through social networks is not much harder and gives a long term return. Just look at some of the brands with successful pages which they use to both engage customers and push out marketing messages, all in a format people positively respond too:

I wouldn’t do it, it’s considered spamming. That’s what ruined myspace.

Yes I know it’s spamming and have no intention of doing it, just curious as to why I havn’t really seen it happening since it does seem like a pretty ‘effective’ way to spam advertise.

Success is an ongoing thing. Sending out one or two blasts and getting banned (or losing all your fans) wouldn’t be a very successful campaign.
