Hi Everyone,

Im new to the Web Development scene and I am currently completing Cert IV in Websites through Chisholm Institute in Cranbourne (Australia).

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me on what is required to get a job in the Web Development field.

First of all, and I know people will disagree with me, but the simple fact is that a degree in Computer Science or a related field is essential for a lot of companies out there. Yes, people here don’t like it and it’s a crappy rule, but when the vast majority of companies use it as a minimum requirement it’s going to be the first requirement, and saying otherwise is unfair to those who want to make it as a Web professional.

However, by far the most important thing a web professional should have is a well-stocked portfolio, with great designs and case studies. If your portfolio and skills are adequate then companies can make exceptions on the degree requirement, although you’d need to be pretty damn good.
