Exciting speakers for July Brisbane Web Design meetup

Hi there

We are every lucky to have two wonderful speakers lined up for next weeks meetup.

Carolyn King will be speaking on “Design for conversion”
Looking at ways of using design techniques to get websites doing what they should be doing - attracting and engaging visitors and converting interest into action to achieve the site’s goals.

Carolyn has presented several times at BWD meetups and her talks are always engaging and packed full of information. Her last talk on “Navigation design alternatives for websites” was a featured slideshare presentation and has received over 20,000 views.

Our second speaker is our first ever international presenter. Derek Featherstone is authority on accessibility and web development. He has presented at numerous conferences, is the Group Lead of the Web Standards Project and visiting Australia giving his workshop Real World Accessibility for HTML5, CSS3 and ARIA.

Derek will be presenting on “Mobile Accessibility: What you need to know”
Mobile usage is on the rise and will continue to provide incredible computing power in the palm of our hands. Most organisations are looking at mobile as an important next step in their offerings. In this session we look at Blackberry, iPhone/iPad, and Android devices (hardware), the platform (operating system) and assistive technology and how it works (or doesn’t work) together to provide an accessible mobile computing solution that includes everyone. We look at building native apps for each platform, how they perform and what it takes to build accessible solutions on each.

Date: Thursday 21 July 2011
Time: Doors open at 5:30pm for a 6pm start
Location: The Edge (part of the State Library of Queensland)

Hey Bruce, have you ever thought of moving to Melbourne?

Sounds great.

Hi Ralph

LOL - lived there for around 10 years.

Nothing like BWD in Melb? I’m sure it wouldn’t take much given the size of the industry and the great people there!

You are quite right: lots of opportunities here. But nothing, as far as I’m aware, quite as amazing as what you are offering there. I’ve certainly been thinking about getting something like that started, but thinking is a lot different from doing.

How did you manage to get Derek on board?

We are very fortunate to have had Russ Weakly (WSG) speak the last 2 years when he’s been in town presenting his workshops and he made the introduction.

Ah yes, he is a great contact to have.
