Does Book Marking Count as a Backlink?

I was wondering if someone who book marks my site or adds to favorites, if they’re using IE God forbids, is actually providing a link within their browser to my website? If so, would this not make a very powerful, relevant, and high quality link considering the link is coming from a well used browser, or does search engines only look at it as a back link from one user of that browser among millions of other users and thus significantly diminishing the quality of the link.

Search engines doesn’t have access to anyones favorites, so no, it doesn’t count.

Right, but if they bookmark your website with a social bookmarking site it might count as a backlink. I say might because most social bookmarking links are nofollow which means no juice is passed back to your site. So even if a link is created, it’ll be relatively worthless.

Why are the social bookmarking sites being so stingy?

Seriously? Social bookmarking sites weren’t created for you to create backlinks.

Just in-case you missed that, social bookmarking sites weren’t created for you to create backlinks.

They were created so we could share bookmarks with each other which has nothing to do with promoting your own website.

Book Marking can’t count as backlinks. Most of social bookmarkings are nofollow.

there are still lots for quality SB sites that are in dofollow… its easy, free, one-way links and it count as backlinks…

True… there are a few around that are still dofollow. Most are new sites which as they become popular seem to take the nofollow route to reduce the spam. I still use them though since they can be a good source of traffic as long as you post with relevant tags and content.

Hi,

Social book marketing is the no follow but it is very useful for increasing our website popularity.

Yes, Yahoo consider both do follow and no follow backlinks from social bookmarking sites.

Yes I agree. Bookmarking a website is mostly used for personal reference. It may not count as backlink but at least, your site has quality and useful for your visitors if someone bookmarked your site.

ya some do follow bookmarking count as a back link like as digg, identica and friendfeed this site provide a backlink.

Definitely, Dofollow book marking links have high weight than nofollow and it is taken into consideration of search engines.

I wish the web would go no-follow and Google would create a new algorithm that isn’t based on backlinks (as it’s clearly abused to infinite). That would stop all the SEO vultures raping the search engines. Whatever happened to content being king, apparently everyone thinks spam is more important than quality. :frowning:

Some social bookmarking sites are dofollow while others are nofollow. Google gives importance to dofollow links therefore these links are counted as backlinks.

CAn you provide some dofollow bookmarking sites. i have but not more than 6 or 7(popular ones).

The above quote is right on. I believe quality content should be what it’s all about. It seems that linking is more of a game that SEO people play, and it’s who has the most links wins. The content of a website however, is what makes the site useful, so why not rank useful sites higher.
