Do WordPress themes download as zip files like Joomla templates?

Do wordpress themes download to a computer like joomla templates do? Or does wordpress work another way with theme downloads?

All themes and plugins on WordPress install and update online without any need to download them - I suppose you could download a zip file but there is no need to do that.
