Do image filenames improve seo?

Does using keywords in the filenames of images help seo/page rank or not? For example, an ecommerce site with hundreds or thousands of products with images. If we use the product name as the image filename … will that improve seo and/or page rank?

Thank you,
Ron

No. The only thing it can help with is to rank your images in image search.

So what do you consider SEO (search engine optimization) ?

Ranking for the search term in image search is part of SEO
that is exactly the definition of search engine optimization

filenames won’t help with PAGERANK though

Ranking in image search is good, since we brand our images.

yes it can help your image to rank but you should build links for that keyword too to rank.

Using appropriate image names helps crawler to fetch images according to users queries. For example if you have car’s image it should be named by the make of the car as “honda civic” instead of image01.

Yes definitely if you wish to promote your product. You will have to use product names in image file names. Hence product names would be your targeted keywords.

It can be helpful if you use keywords in the image file name. Additionally you can use a keyword or keyword phrase in the images alt text to help improve SEO.

I think image file names related to your keyword helps in SEO.
i have tried it myself

Image ranking is a very important aspect of SEO, the conversion rate increases with visual & video marketing of your product.
You cannot imagine how much traffic you can get from images. People have the tendency to visually simulated. Whenever a search term of a product is placed in Google or any SE, images are displayed at the first page of the searches. And these images have a very high click rates. One of my client selling i-phone with a relative new site is having 50% organic traffic from image ranking. Images are easier to rank in competitive keywords and do make sure that the file names depicts the product name followed by model, like jeff said : not image01 or Honda car - best is Honda civic

In general you need should name the files to describe what they are. Hopefully this will also align with your sites content. Then you should also be using alt tags to further describe what they are (which should still be inline with your sites content).

yes it is helpful to increase SERP but it might increase your bounce rate as well as side effect because people come to your site via image search and they might not interested in your site. They are just interested in your image so they will leave your site quickly

Using keywords in the filenames of images does not help seo/page rank, it only help with rank your image in image search.

Images does not help in SEO but they can be utilized for generating better traffic. Using proper title, description and tags can help a lot and more importantly the size of image. We can see that bigger images ranks higher than smaller images. So better the size of image, the better it will rank in search engine.

It may help but alt tag in images is more important as per my knowledge.
