Do I need Virus Software - New Mac Book Pro

Hi all

Recently bought a Mac Book Pro, just wondering… I’ve read somewhere that you don’t need any virus software because of how well apple builds it’s OS’s. Surely if I’m surfing across a wireless network somebody can get at my machine, do I need to download or buy any software? What are your thoughts on this? Anybody had similar experiences or owns a mac?

Thanks CB

It is more that not enough people use OSX to make it a worthy target for hackers. Though I do not think you need any anti virus software. IANAMU. (i am not a mac user) :stuck_out_tongue:

 a suppose thats a good start.

(i am not a mac user) I wasn’t until about 24hr ago, thanks for the link I’ll keep on searching see what I come up with, Thanks

The odds are you will still need it even though there is a far lesser threat there will be still other vulnerabilities and malware type attacks. Furthermore you must be vigilant in checking the files you pass on to your friends and colleagues that they are not infected (usually MS Windows users). So even though it is negligible your OS will get effected you may unwittingly infect others, if you get an infected attachment, and forward it, etc. You can get open source scanners, etc.

Personally I’d be more concerned that your Firewall and Encryption on the Wi-Fi is applied correctly.

Some good points there xhtmlcoder thanks for pointing these out, I have a PC also on the network, good call

Whenever people ask me if they should get antivirus protection for the mac, I point them to this comic (enjoy):

All computers should have up-to-date anti virus software installed.

I’ve had a Mac for about 8 months now and haven’t got anti-virus on it and probably won’t put it on it until I’m taught a lesson in internet security by a virus.

I don’t know of any Mac users who use anti-virus software. I’ve never used any anti-virus software on any of my Macs and have been fine.
If you do want to secure yourself, however, then you have plenty of options, even Kaspersky is available for the Mac.

 very good, a take it you don’t have a mac then Alex

Seems like mixed views… it might be best to get some form of antivirus protection just to be on the safe side, thanks guys!

Even if there are not many viruses targetted at Macs at the moment you will still be receiving plenty of Windows viruses. Without an antivirus program to detect and remove them you will be forwarding them to everyone and will be responsible for all your friends who use Windows receiving (and possibly having their computer infected by) those viruses.

yes, thanks felgall I’ve taken this on board xhtml mentioned this above thanks.

Nope but I am tempted to move to Mac… Windows has caused me so much stress over the years I can’t count the times I thought of committing mutiny.

For mac i use Protemac Netmine. I have Leopard and use it for protects against viruses and as firewall. Think, it’s great.

Well I really think that anti virus can be helpful for a system. If mac book pro has such feature then don’t worry much. Even if you install any anti virus I don’t think it will harm your laptop.
