Does it carry as much clout as it used to 10 years ago?
We applied about a year ago and heard nothing back, I know some people that say you should submit your site every 3 months till it is accepted, others advise to submit once and then leave it.
I believe that Google still considers DMOZ as a reasonably authoritative source, and certainly more credible than the plethora of free and open directories that infest the web. No, it isn’t essential, you can still do well without it, but a link from DMOZ is a good one to get, precisely because they are hard to come by.
I have been ‘monitoring’ DMOZ for years. If you download the monthly rdf dump you can get the data. Some months have been as high as 9000 new additions.
Wow. If what you are saying is true cbp, I am amazed! 3k-6k new sites a month? Not bad. How do you know these numbers?
I am one of those people that figures DMOZ to be dead because of the lack of expansion. I am prepared to be part of the solution, I’d love to be an editor. I would honestly add valuable sites to the directory (including a few of my own)
I do not know of any “SEO expert” that would agree with that, so assume that they ain’t no expert.
Where are you getting your information from? DMOZ lists 3000-6000 new sites a month. Far from being dead, that makes them the fastest growing directory on the web by a substantial margin. The problem is that substantially more than 3000-6000 sites are suggested each month. They will always be behind.
I am constantly amazed at all the DMOZ whingers when they are not prepared to volunteer their own time to help the project … they are happy to take pot shots at others, but are not prepared to be a part of the solution … don’t figure.
Have you ever tried to become an editor - you would stand more chance of being accepted as a listing
I did have e-mail contact with the head man of DMOZ and he suggested as you did - but your acceptance is dependent on you suggesting competitors to go onto the site.
DMOZ committed suicide a long time ago, and I’d be surprised if it had anything left to give.
Sure, there are still some useful links on there, and it appears occasionally when I search for certain broad subjects, but I wouldn’t bet on it providing much SEO value any more.
There may be recent evidence to support that it still matters, but as it is impossible to get onto a page without a moderator that is either there or not crooked I wouldn’t think much of it.
I think it may start new debate but my version of dmoz is
‘lucky, foolish old man who is just respected for being old’
Not brilliant…just pioneer…
it happens many old man just devours loyatly for being first in sth …it same case…
It is still not dead becuase we are giving unnecessay hype to it and discussing it in forums.
Surprising, but slowly but surely dmoz only exist in these kinds of discussions.
People will gradually forget it,
Mind you,it is from the ages when yahoo was young, being a businessman,i feel like it was like cocunot in money’s hand,a wasted opportunities…we can see where its younger brother yahoo and google have reached and where is sitting basking of its virtual pride and oldness…
The so called editors there work as if they have been punished by court and have been made to work…lol
They bask of keep their forum so clean that they may end of with open ground one day(or like personal web dairy)…
The company which acts in whim cannot be company(they bluntly says, even if u fulfill our rules, there is no guarantee that your site will be accepted…we will do it when we are free…coming from next vacation…lol…or if we feel lazy we even may not do it) lol
what will you do,if your tax officer says so…? or says so in your real life…
so now people like us have been keeping it alive discussing it again and again and giving unnecessary attention and respect.
It is wasted project buniness wise and socially as well.
