Digression about various Windows OS

At this point, the discussion veered off on an interesting tangent.,

Compliments of Firebox:

:grumble-grumble:

Hi there Ron,

well, that it unusual. :scream:

It works, for me, using “Windows 7” with these test browser…

  1. IE11
  2. Firefox 48.0 53.0
  3. Chrome
  4. Opera 39.0
  5. Vivaldi 1.3

I better find out what Firebox is. :mask:

The error message is probably a feature of FF and WinXP. Works for me in Win7 with JS and a bunch of cdns enabled Thanks for testing.

Works for me using Windows 10 Vivaldi 1.3

A Firefox extension more or less similar to the dev tools.

  <source src="videos/Chris77.m4v" type="video/mp4">
</video>

I have heard of mp4, but I don’t recall having seen the m4v extension before.

its one of the standard extensions for mp4 video - anyway the source should be working off the type and not the extension

Hi there Ron,

I put a few of shovels of nutty slack in the steam
boiler and fired up my old “Windows XP” pc.

After a while I was able to update Firefox to version
48.0 and can confirm that it does not play the video. :scream:

Are you really using “Windows XP”, or like me you
have it as a standby, in case repairs are required
for the main machine?

<ot>

No, I am not as progressive an you are, Mr C. I am still relying on WinXP as my main machine, although I do have Win7 and Win10 boxes within arm’s reach to encourage me to keep at 'em.

WinXP does not support some of the new security protocols so the connections fail. It really is a vulnerable O/S now.

Basically it is no longer an operating system and simply a security hole to make it easier for hackers to break into other people’s computers.

Hi there Stephen,

Don’t go frightening Ron with your scaremongering. :cold_sweat:

I find it difficult to believe that any self respecting hacker
would actually want to break into an “Windows XP” O.S. :mask:

Surely, there are more enticing targets to entertain them. :sunglasses:

I didn’t say they would - it is just a stepping stone to breaking into other systems (one million zombie XP machines can break into any decent system far more quickly than an individual hacker could without all the zombies)

       So Ron can sleep easy in his bed tonight then. :sunglasses:

Yes - it is the rest of us that need to worry about what hackers are using Ron’s computer for.:grinning:

Well, at least, they will not be viewing my video example on it. :mask:

Curse those damned hackers. I would still be happily using Windows 2000 if a hacker group had not hacked my PC and, before it was over, destroyed 2 hard drives (they would no longer mount) and the motherboard (wiped out the bios), I don’t know what else might have been damaged just for fun.

I assume they found me while I was new car shopping one day. I must have clicked on a hacked ad or something.

Yes, I have a lot of “respect” for the damage that hackers can inflict which is why I have so many barriers aound this PC.

I can tolerate Win7 but I dispise Win10. So if I can relearn UNIX or pick up Linux, I’ll make that swich as soon as I can.

Microsoft seem to be slowly adding all the features of Linux to Windows 10 - by the time they drop the 10 from the name you will probably be able to run all linux programs native in Windows.

Then they might use the name “Lindows”. Seems that could have been the reason they fought that name being used of another party some years ago.
