Developer (dual) monitor setup

My work consists of different development tasks, just sometimes GUI development.
I would like to know which monitor setup you use for software development.

  • Both productivity and ergonomics are important.

  • Some tools I often use:
      o management tools: database manager (>= 1000 pixel), file explorer, version control, command line, …
      o      reading material: PDF (>= 1000 pixel), web browser (>= 1100 pixel)
      o IDE: often 1280 Pixel is enough, but especially for GUI development 1600 pixel are necessary

Use cases (use case, share of this use case relative to the total usage time)

  • web & ebooks: reading material 30%
  • office: reading material, text editor 30%
  • programming in general: reading material, 1-2 x IDE, management tool, maybe diagram 25%
  • additionally for GUI development: preview, GUI debugger 15%

Options
Favored combinations for a dual monitor setup (10:16 means rotated/vertical):

  • 24“, 16:10 and 24“, 16:10
  • 24“, 16:10 and 24“, 10:16
  • 29“, 2560 x 1080 and 24“, 10:16

Not possible:

  • 30”, 2560 x 1600 pixel is interesting, but extremely expensive (> 1000€)
  • 34“, 3440 x 1440 is probably not appropriate, because in 60% of the usage time it would be too big, cause heat and waste energy.

  1. What do you think about the ergonomics and productivity of rotated/vertical screens, especially when used as secondary monitor?
  2. Any experience in using 2 monitors with different sizes (24”, 29”) and/or different orientations, but with a similar / the same pixel pitch?
  3. What do you think about the combination of 24”, 10:16 (rotated) and 29”, 21:9, 2560 x 1080 in particular?
  4. What is about 21:9, 2560 x 1080 for software development? The height of 29", 21:9 is even a bit lower than the height of a 24", 1080p monitor.
  5. Which of the options do you recommend/use or do you have another good alternative?

last thing I think about monitor is ‘electric usage’ or even heat… At least I don’t feel anything. Here’s a sample

$335 for 34" Wide Monitor

If I ever get a next monitor then I’m definitly getting single Ultra Wide monitor to replace my dual monitor. Personally, if I’m strictly using it for non-gaming purpose, I think dual monitor is better. For me, I’m a casual gamer and having a wide monitor is a huge plus. Gaming w/ dual monitor sucks!

For me as a short-sighted person there is one more problem with 34", 3440 x 1440: The pixel pitch is significantly smaller than on a 24", 1080p. I prefer a pixel pitch >= 0.26 mm. I want to avoid DPI scaling, because then you do not really have all the 3440 x 1440 pixels available anymore and some programs can not handle it appropriately.

If there was a 35", 3440 x 1440 (=> bigger pixel pitch) I would consider buying it.
