Contacted to slice a layout for an existing client

Hi there,

Awhile back i was ask to slice a website layout for a client and anyway they gave me the psd’s and i sliced the psd into html and css when i sent them the html files they told me they werent happy with it this was a webdesign company,

Since i have the psd can i slice the psd myself and place the sliced layout on my portfolio stateing i sliced this for the client?

Or would that be illegal to do so?
Thanks,William

That would be illegal. You were implicitly given permission to store a copy of the work on your computer for the purpose of doing the job. You were never given permission to make another copy to publish on your website. Copyright grants the author exclusive right to make copies of their work.

even though i was the one i sliced and he didnt pay me for slicing the layout into html? and there is no contract at all?

That’s what copyright means – exclusive right to make copies. You have zero right to put a copy of his design on your website. Not being paid doesn’t give you any new rights to his work. You can ask him for permission to put it in your portfolio, but you can’t do it otherwise.
