Confusion with Reading Settings

I seem to get the template hierarchy in WordPress. How ever I am trying to figure out what the Settings -> Reading have to do with this. Especially the Post Page drop-down. Is it OK to leave this blank? I have set up a site (still in just testing mode) to display the *.php files that will have and I am using a custom template for a video page. I want my posts to be the videos. When I leave Post Page set to nothing every thing works as expected but when I set it to use the video page for posts it keep reverting to home.php. Is there something I am forgetting? Thanks

I think that index.php is used by default for the main blog post page, unless a home.php file exists, than this is used instead.

You can create a page called “blog” and a page called “home” then in the reading settings you can set “home” to be the home page and “blog” to list the blog posts, again the same rules apply for the main blog posts (home.php, index.php) however, if you create a file named front-page.php then it will override the home and index.php files for whatever you have set to be the front page in the settings > reading section no matter if it’s a page or your blog posts.
