Configuring RDNS

Hello,

I’m trying to configure RDNS for my server, but I’m struggling because I can’t add the records to WHM but have to add it via the host control panel. The server is hosted via Hetzner using their rather curious and slightly mysterious ‘server robot’. Their support can’t help. I think because the server isn’t managed. The record is entered as follows:

ip.ip.ip.ip.hostname.mydomain.com (with the IPSs are of course entered in reverse)

But I’m getting this error:

The PTR record for the address points to an unknown host name. (At one verification source)

Do I need to add an A record for the host name?

Hope that is enough information, I’ve tried to follow various guides and I don’t see why the entry is wrong.

Regards

Chris

To set up a working rDNS entry, you will need the matching forward entry as well (the A record). Once you have the A set up, most control panels will let you set the rDNS up to match. Some places will let you set an rDNS up without the matching A tag but for completeness its best to have them both.

Thanks for getting back. Appreciate it.

There is an A record for the hostname already. And if I run nslookup -q=ptr ip.ip.ip.ip. I get a positive result.

but I’m still getting mail deliverability errors because:

The PTR record for the address points to an unknown host name.

The a record for the host name is simply ‘host’ - should it actually be ip.ip.ip.ip.host

I’m not sure if the makes any sense at all. I feel i may be way off the mark.

Let me just check the server isn’t dual homed / mutliple IP and you’ve set one up but mail is going out via another.

If you want me to have a quick check private message the IP and I’ll test from here

Hi!

What a shame I don’t think I can PM. I haven’t been back to site point for a long, long time. Can I post the IP here?

Chris

Hi,

I solved this - I didn’t need the IP in the reverse entry just the hostname prefix and the domain. I hope that makes sense to someone reading this.
