Communicating "Edit Post" to Users

Below each Article on my website is a Comments section.

And beneath each Comment is a bottom shaded bar with two options:
1.) Report this Comment
2.) Edit this Comment
So my question is this…

What is the best way to communicate the “Edit this Comment” functionality?

1.) Should I just have a Text Link (e.g. “Edit Comment”)?

2.) Should I just have an Icon?

3.) Should I have BOTH Text and an Icon similar to this screen-shot>

Thanks,

Debbie

P.S. I also want to make a decision that promotes Accessibility (within reason).

The text makes it most clear, IMHO, so I’d suggest text or text + image.

I would go with text unless I was supplied a mock-up with an icon. In that case I would use an image replacement technique. Though I wouldn’t make more work for myself having to create an icon… screw that. Than again… I’m a developer not really a designer so yeah… Unless someone handed me the artwork completed I wouldn’t give an icon a second though because I could care less about ubber awesome graphics but thats just me. So the moral of the story for me anyway is that I would rather spend my time doing something *useful than creating icons or searching for icons and having to deal with copyright issues and that jaze. However, my work does not tend to be in your face gallery worthy design. So if that is something that is important to you perhaps spending time on icons is a good idea. Unless I’m handed a completed mock-up by a designer I tend to go as simple as possible with the least amount of images.

So how would you improve the screen-shot above?

Here is my latest stab at things…

Debbie

Well, see my sample above, and let me know what you think?!

Debbie

Give the link a nicer color and remove the underline.

Define “nicer color”…

And I thought it was a “no-no” to remover underlines from hyperlinks…

Debbie

It’s whatever looks good in my opinion.

The standard blue link with underline looks a bit ugly to me. Why not use whatever color the rest of your links are? Or are they just the standard blue with underline? (In that case, leave it as is.)

No! No!

Underlines certainly can help, but as long as your links are clearly identified in some way (such as with a"nice" color :shifty: ) all’s fine.

Heh!

Most of my site uses buttons to navigate around and do things.

The only place I use links is for traditional things like to an Article, and for those, I am currently just using the default blue.

No! No!

Have a Hex or two in mind?

Or maybe some links to sites where you admire their links?

Debbie

I’d say find a color that you feel suits your site. I don’t have a clear idea of your color scheme.

The only hex I have in mind these days is #bada55, which I’m dying to use somewhere.

This is where design meets usability. Good usability means any link should be obviously clickable. The user shouldn’t need to hover over something just to discover whether it’s a link. But Ralph also has a point. The default link appearance is a bit unpleasant to look at, especially against the softer background colors. Ideally, it should be both aesthetically pleasing and obviously clickable.

HAH!!!

(Nah, “pea green” is unbecoming of you!)

Debbie

You could use a regular black color text link or a ocean blue text link, however you should think of adding a image logo so that people get the idea where the edit button is.
