Color subsititute (and many broken links in "Important" threads

I found a terrific tutorial using CSS and four gifs to make tabs for my site. All I want to do is to change the gray colors of these gifs to corresponding shades (my shades rgb(202, 101, 0) to rgb(255, 217, 179).

I do not have anything but paint and gimp – and I can’t make heads nor tails from the latter.

Do I have to go out and use gradient software to simulate these, or is there an easier way?

I’ve tried many of the links in the “Important” posts at the top of this forum only to get 404’s.

I found a number of free gradient apps (through Google) which I used to get the blending I wanted. Then used MS Paint to crop them to the sizes shown in the above attachments. Not quite as robust as I’d like, but serves the purpose.
