Coldfusion programming error or?

I’m trying to get the data from this website http://mrburns2.human.cornell.edu/pad/data/test_spark_ch.cfm

In PC it works fine but in Mac it doesn’t work. I’ve contacted the website developer and he said it’s server error. My web guy suggested, given it works in PC and not in Mac, it’s coldfusion programming error (some things inside the syntax/scripts etc) or compatibility across platform issues.

I’m trying to send the developer some feedbacks. What do you think?

thank you.

  1. So when you say it doesn’t load, you see absolutely nothing? Not even a “Safari can’t connect to the server” type message… If you mean you see a blank screen, do a “view source”. What html code do you see?

  2. Can you view any page on that site at all (with Mac/Safari)? If you can view other pages (just not that specific one) then it’s a problem with that specific page.

  3. I noticed the page you linked uses CFFORM. Maybe there’s some compatibility issues there. But that’s a total guess.

Hi, sorry for the incomplete explanation of the problem.
At work I’m using Safari and I just tried again the website won’t load. I just tried in another Mac using Safari, same thing but when using FireFox it loads fine.

Yes the ABBOT UFSD errored same like yours. But fortunately I don’t need ABBOT school district.

So it seems the problem only occurs on Safari in Mac but not in Firefox in Mac or FF/IE/Safari in PC/Mac.

I do see one server error when “ABBOT UFSD” is selected. But I don’t know if that’s the problem you’re talking about …

ABBOT UFSD
The value “” cannot be converted to a number

Then I think you’re back to dealing with the developer about the problem. A platform compatibility issue that effects every page on the site seems very unlikely. So my guess would be it’s something more than just a coding issue. Unless it’s on a global application/server level. There are plenty of CF sites out there that can be viewed on MAC’s. So unfortunately I think it’s a question only the developer can answer.

I posted in Mac forum and they are able to confirm my result. Using Mac/Safari/FF it doesn’t load. But when using Mac/VMWare/IE8 the website works fine. When using PC/IE8/FF/Safari works fine.

Unfortunately those results don’t point to anything conclusive. But the fact that you can’t seem to view any pages on that site seems suspicious. Could simply be a network/firewall problem. Though if you can view pages from a pc w/in the same network that casts things into doubt. But with still not a lot to go on, these are all just guess. Too bad I don’t have a MAC to test it on myself. Maybe you could post the link on a MAC forum, ask if someone else is able to see the page…?

  1. It doesn’t load means it’s not showing the pages that supposed to, but in the bottom left of Safari it says "Waiting for … " ( … = the website address).

  2. No I can’t.

I’d like to update the above. It works in FF only the first time visiting the website. When I refresh or went to other wesbite and comeback, the website doesn’t load, it keeps “Waitinf for …”

I assume you’re talking about the “Export to Excel” feature. Can you elaborate on “doesn’t work”? Do you get an error message, is the data corrupted, does nothing happen, … or something else entirely? Depending on the problem, a screen shot or file upload might help
