is it just me, but the latest version of this browser 24/7/2018 seems to have
gone from white ( #FFFFFF ) to an odd creamy ( #FFFCD8 ) colour?

Mine is white. Same build.
My computer at work was outdated, thank you for posting. After updating, color is white, even in the incognito mode.
But I did have to remove it from my files as it wasn’t showing up in my apps.
Guess should be asking what’s your OS? Mine is Windows10.
I just checked my Chrome browsers (Windows 10 and iPad) and they both looked “white” to me.
I was thinking it might be something like what Vivaldi can do with the “browser chrome” aka. “skin” in terms of using the color of the active page as the “accent color”. (IMHO, more like opacity or a bleed, meh)
Have you looked into the browser theme settings?
