Can a Theme be Too Old Even Being Supported?

Hey Everyone,

This might be a silly question, but I’m rather new at WordPress. I was having a discussion with a teammate yesterday and he’s convinced that our theme, although still being developed and supported (Bridge, by Qode Interactive), is bloated and too slow. His argument is that because there are so many features, there ends up being more and more bloat as the developers update the theme over time.

Personally, I like the theme because of the feature set and the granular control it gives you with its settings. Granted, we don’t necessarily need all of the bells and whistles and we want to increase the speed of our site.

Can a supported theme get too old?

Thanks

If you really like what the theme has to offer, yet don’t need or want to use all it has, why not build a child theme to work off of it?

That is the nature of web development. Technical dept is mutually exclusive with the life and number of people who have worked on the project. The longer a project has existed and/or touched different peoples hands the more technical dept. However, technical debt can be significantly decreased through documentation, standards, and incremental updates/upgrades to “out-dated” components/dependencies.

Ah, so in contrast to is argument, Bridge could very well be a speedy modern theme. At least, that’s the impression I get when looking elsewhere for the same answer. I don’t see anyone, anywhere saying, “Bridge is clunky and outdated”.

Thanks for the child theme link Mittineague.

How do you multi-quote on this site? (another newb question)

Thanks
