Blank space in IE

I have a multi-page site (to which I have recently added social media buttons, which may or may not have something to do with the problem - I’ve only noticed it since then). In Internet Explorer one of the pages displays with a huge amount of space at the end of the content. This page is pretty much a copy of another page which does not have this space-at-the-bottom problem.

The URLs are: the problem page: http://www.alexrussellwriting.com/audioscript.html
The similar but OK page: http://www.alexrussellwriting.com/read.html

I have tried everything I can think of, including the solution to a post on here of a couple of years ago, but even that didn’t work.
Any help would be very welcome!

Hi JaneB. Welcome to the forums.

Which version of IE are you seeing this in?

Looks like IE9.

To me it looks exactly the same in Firefox and IE9. No extra space at the bottom. :frowning:

Well, thanks very much for checking. I’ve just had another look, in case some magic might have solved the problem, but the “audioscript.html” page is still running on down for several more screen-heights’ worth of sea background. If you can’t see it, that’s maybe a good thing, but why can I?? I’ve just double-checked, and I’m using IE9 (on a 64-bit machine, Windows7). Any further ideas, please, or should I just let it go? (gulp!)

I’ve had a look using IE9 on 64-bit Windows 7, and I can’t see any problem, either. From what you’re describing, the page must be throwing a scroll bar on your machine, but it isn’t on mine - although there does seem to be the briefest glimmer of one as the page loads, but it vanishes immediately.

And I get the opposite effect - the momentary appearance of proper-length scroll bar slider (is that what you call them?), as with the other pages (and other browsers), which rapidly becomes a tiny slider indicating a very long page…
I do appreciate you guys’ interest. This is a tedious problem, driving me mad, but I really don’t want to leave it unsolved. If it appears this way to me, I surely can’t be the only one?

I can sympathise, because it would drive me mad, too, if it were my site.

There is just one validation error of the misbehaving page:

Error Line 1019, Column 15: Stray end tag a.

Not a jenny</a></p>

I can’t see that this could have anything to do with it, but I’m always happy to clutch at straws.

Thanks for spotting it. I’ve removed it, but I’m afraid it hasn’t helped.
It couldn’t be something to do with the Yahoo webplayer code, could it? I’ve used it on other pages, inserting it in the same place, I think, and they’re OK. But I’m really at a loss with this. As you say - clutching at straws. I’d think it was some stupid error on my part, but for the fact that it’s only in IE, and that the other pages are fine…

Well, here’s another straw to clutch at - it couldn’t be a caching problem on your local PC, could it?

Possibly - if I knew what that meant ! Could you advise on how I check, and how I should go about resolving it? Thanks again, and in advance!

Browsers will keep a cached copy of a web page, so that if you revisit that page, they’ll show the version they have stored locally, rather than download it again from the site. I think it varies from browser to browser how long they keep the copy for. You should be able to force your browser to fetch a fresh copy by using the reload/refresh button, but you can also clear the cache, just to be on the safe side. I’m not on Windows at the moment, and don’t have IE on this machine, so I’m not sure where to look for the option. Try under preferences, recent history, privacy/security or anywhere else that looks hopeful until you find a “clear cache” option - unless somebody using IE9 is able to post something more accurate.

Ah, I see what you mean. I do use the refresh button every time I try a new tweak and re-upload the page. Following your advice, I’ve just tried something which I think means “clear history” (I’m in France, so I get French options! but “supprimer l’historique de navigation” sounds relevant). No joy, I’m afraid. Many thanks again for your help - I really appreciate it. I’ll tune in again tomorrow, but have to call it a day for tonight.

PostScript. This is UNBELIEVABLE. I have just had a final look at the site in IE and now ALL IS WELL!!! Clearly, your advice to clear the history has done the trick, but I needed to close and reopen it for it to take effect. I am SO RELIEVED! Thank you, thank you, thank you! (I’d quite like to know why IE threw up the problem in the first place, but what the hell…!)
