Best practice for providing audio files

Greetings all,

I want to set up an audio file download page, and I’m wondering what the best practices are. The audio files will be 20-40 min recordings of talks. Here are some ideas I was thinking about:

  • provide two formats: MP3 and AAC. On modern browsers, either of those should open up OK in the default media player or in iTunes. I think the advantage of AAC is the file can be directly placed onto your iPod through iTunes.

  • does it make sense to provide an embedded audio player, or should I assume that visitors have a default media player?

  • would it make sense to host the files on Vimeo or YouTube (and use an embedded player) instead, and will that work for audio-only files?

  • what other considerations are there?

Thanks,

So can MP3…just saying.
