I’m planning my web design business, and before I launch, I will need to find a reliable and high performance web host for my Wordpress sites.
I recall reading something about this topic somewhere… but just not sure where.
I’m currently with Dreamhost for 2x .net/.com and VentraIP (Australian host) for 2x .com.au sites. Sites with Dreamhost have been really slow and the VentraIP admin interface is a shocker.
As I’ve got some Australian domains, is it possible to host everything with the one host? Would performance still be good? It would be really, really nice to have just ONE host. I expect the majority of the sites to be Australian .com.au.
And who is best for security? I have heard Bluehost gets repeatedly hacked. I’m backing up nightly to Amazon S3 and CloudFront handles the DNS.
What measures would/do you currently take to ensure your Wordpress site is secure?
Well, I believe if you consider some VPS options - that will allow you to be more serious aboput security measures. That will allow you to install whatever you need or whatever you want to on the server. That might be impossible on shared hosting at all.
Wordpress security is often more down to the individual than it is to the host, as once you take overall system security and competent configuration of web hosting services for granted, a lot of the decisions and task that need to be carried out specifically for the best security of a wordpress install are outside the scope of support for most hosts.
A host can’t make good decisions on what plugins to install and not install.
A host won’t keep your install and plugins up to date.
A host won’t decide whether or not to install themes from dubious sources.
A host won’t harden a wordpress install.
A host isn’t responsible for security of ftp and other login details on your desktop.
Well, you’re much likely to hear that sort of thing happen to a host that has thousands of servers, like they do, than you are about a host with just a couple of them, simply because of the numbers involved.
Another bad thing that happen with very big hosting company is … their IP addresses frequently get listed in anti spam databases. You suddenly realize that your mails are going into the Junk Folder in hotmail and gmail, and when you do research, you come to know that it was not your fault … some one on the same server did the spamming and your mail server IP was blacklisted …
some one on the same server did the spamming and your mail server IP was blacklisted …
That is indeed likely to happen, especially when the number of accounts per server goes well into the hundreds, either because a fellow customer misbehaves, of because a script gets exploited and does a spammer’s job.
Some of the bigger hosts have found technical solutions mitigate the effects of that sort of thing, like a mail gateway. It is one reason why email sending is often limited to a few hundred emails per hour, even though technically a lot more could be allowed.
