BCIT Web Technologies

I am looking for online courses for web development and after researching several options in the Greater Vancouver area, I’m most interested in BCIT’s Web Technologies Certificate program.

The Associate Certificate comes first: http://www.bcit.ca/study/programs/6420acert#courses

Then you go for the full certificate: http://www.bcit.ca/study/programs/6420cert#courses

I’ve developed web pages and dabbled in graphic editing as a hobby, but a recent request from a friend has lit a spark and I believe I’m hooked.

I feel I’m more natural at back end web application programming, but still have a desire to keep my graphic editing skills up to date.

I’ve been self-studying for the past month (XHTML, CSS, CMS, PHP and SQL) to reduce the learning curve should I choose a program.

My current goal: Develop the necessary skills (school or self-taught) to get into a development firm and perhaps start a business on the side.

Any feedback on how I’m tackling this would be much appreciated

It is good that you’re looking for “formal” training and to get Web related certificates. However, certificate in Web is not better then actual work experience in Web. Many non-traditional web developers are self-taught then worked for a small company who accepts non college degree workers. So, if you’re looking for a short cut route to be a web developer then self-teaching yourself is the way to go. For the long run, I recommend that you get Computer Science degree. No, you’re not going to learn much about web. Yes, it will get your MORE money and better chance to work for big companies like Google, Oracle, Yahoo, and etc… Anyways, g’luck!
