Arrows for Illustration Resources

Hello.

Anyone knows where to find arrows to illustrate product’s usage? Preferrably free resource.
I am not looking for unique design but a ready made.

Maybe there’s program that allows manipulation of graphics (arrow in this case) to better suit shape desired?

By the way, if I wanted unique arrow or any other element designed, how much would it cost on average?

Thanks

Would a really basic tool like Canva work?

Hello. It has limited selection of what I am looking for even through $1 puchases stock photography by acting as resellers. But this aside what I am looking for, this in itself can be convenient because I leverage their partnership with stock photography firm giving easy access without any memberships.

Do you know of other services similar to Canva that also have partnership with stock firms? I could find what I am looking for there.

Thanks

Maybe something like this list would help, even though you’re not necessarily looking for something that’s free?

I don’t, unfortunately, but @alexmwalker might have some guidance for you…

Of course, if you have any of the Adobe design products, they have arrows built in—which can be styled, manipulated etc.

It’s kind of a “how long is a piece of string” issue. It depends on too many factors. I’m sure you could pay a high end designer a small fortune, or pay a fiver on any number of services that do simple jobs like this.

Thanks but this one is more for UI design for apps and would not be suitable to illustrate product usage.

I see you mentioned @alexmwalker

Does that ping him and he gets notified to respond?

Yes

There’s a product I like called Skitch, which has become part of Evernote. It’s a free download and gives you a bunch of stretchy arrows, labels and highlighters. Does that look like it would work?

That screenshot is so beautifully meta.

I thought it was quite (s)kitsch. :stuck_out_tongue:

Can you transfer arrows to photo editing program and work with those?

Not with Skitch. When I use it, it’s only because the arrows look good and are easy. I usually export annotated screenshots straight from Skitch.

What Photo editing program are you talking about?

Mainly Paint.NET but I can install GIMP if needed.

Can you elaborate on “work with those”? Do you mean that the arrows would be additional layers and you can move them around still or just work with the photo you generated out of Skitch?

Make them on transparent background and use on different layers in other pictures.

I’m not sure I know of any program that does that… Most seem to alter the single layer, so without using GIMP or other photo editors, it may be hard to get that feature.

I don’t know what you mean by feature but I just need to have arrows in their large enough resolution or preferrably vectors to remove background and work with them. As far as I know, no graphic editing program that has library of graphics can export them in specifications I mentioned above to allow further manipulations. So my only bet seems to be stock photo websites.

Sorry, by feature I was referring to Paint.NET and Skitch don’t seem to store the items in separate layers when you “save” the image. They all merge it into a single later.

Stock images and GIMP are likely your best opportunity right now. I know Paint.NET will let you move objects (the arrows) around before you export the “final” image, but once you export it, or close it and re-open it, they are a single layer.

I couldn’t even figure out how to move items I placed on the image in Skitch, so I think once you draw them, they are part of the single layer.

Actually Paint.NET has layers and has project format akin to. PSD Photoshop has. You can export image as .JPG which will merge layers but before you do that you save it in project format so you can make changes later.

I was thinking what if to use white canvas and open it with Skitch so I will be able to have graphic elements on white background. I could remove white background and make it .PNG format but the problem is size of graphics in Skitch. Skitch probably does not allow resizing such elements resulting in higher resolution.

Hmm… I don’t seem to have that option on mine… maybe I’m on an older version though. I’ll have to see if there is a newer version – thanks for the tip.

Yeah, I didn’t see a way necessarily to do that either. You can drag it out as far as you can, but it only seems to resize up to a point.
