Are the websites like BusinessInsider pay for content

We often see the bigshots have picture-list contents. For example something like this http://www.businessinsider.com/creative-billboard-ads-2011-8?op=1

Do they really pay or contact all the picture owners?

Or they simple rely on fair use?

Thanks

Gniuz,

I can’t say if they actually go through proper channels to obtain rights to images but I think sometimes there is a calculated risk the site owners take. On the one hand, you want to be sure that if you use images from a service that specializes in providing images, that you pay for them. If you are pulling them off some no-name blog somewhere, you may be able to get away with using them without permission. I’m not sure about laws in other countries but in the U.S., there are no copyright police. Owners of copyrights have to pursue their rights on their own and sue if they want someone to stop using their content. That is a time consuming and often costly process. So, its typically only those with deep pockets or who are determined to stop someone at all costs that pursue lawsuits.

Best,

Shawn

I am not a copyright expert here so feel free to take my views with a pinch of salt.

If you noticed, Business Insider actually credit the source for each and every image that they use. I think, for images, as long as you credit where credit is due and you are not hotlinking the image from the source’s server, you should be fine. Of course, if you are getting links from Business Insider, which is one of the top websites on the Internet, I don’t think you will complain with the potential traffic and SEO value that you will get from them. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks. I’m guessing that’s what happen as well.
Hope someone with personal knowledge on this can weight in.

Cheers
