Are backlinks from forum signature worth?

Yup, its really worthy especially if your website is related to SEO. =)
Forum sigs is a sure BLs for a website. Just like blogging.

Real people follow relevant signature links so they can be worth it for that reason even where the forum sets them as nofollow. They do need to be relevant links though so you want to use them on forums where the forum subject is related to the subject that your site is about. So in a computer help type forum such as this one your signature links would need to point to pages about computers.

It would be better of it is a do follow forum. Forums that are related to your niche and with do follow attributes is your way on getting quality traffic and links.

I really think that it is very worth it. Specially if the forum you are joining is related to youe site. ::wink:

Research the forums and check they are relevant to what you are wanting to post, this way the interest will be of those people who are looking for what you have to offer, rather than filtering through those that don’t.

I think as felgall suggests, the value of forum links is that real visitors follow them. I can’t see there being much SEO value as the context of the link needs to match the page being linked. All the links on the page form that context, so look at all the links on this ill fated page:

  • paid surveys
  • sourcing agent
  • free friend adder
  • SEO services
  • Canadian pharmacy
  • wing chun
  • real estate etc etc etc

Given that the context is all over the place, I don’t think there’s going to be much value contributed by your forum link. You get more value from a link on a page that closely matches your page.

As for the passing of PR, there won’t be a whole lot of that either. The toolbar shows 0 for this page and there are about a million links (I had to guess at the figure), so very little will be passed.

Am not sure for back links, but we can get good amount of traffic with the DP & SP forums.

Great, now the forum spammers are collaborating…

Guys, forum links have very little value, why won’t you believe what you’re being told?

Put yourself in Google’s shoes, forum links are very easy to get and for the most part have 0 PR and very little context relevance, how much would you reward people for getting them?

We’re outnumbered - quick form a circle!

A link is a link, more the better.
Forum links may not help your PR but helps in indexing.

Yes true !!!
At the same time as starting DP and Sitepoint is good quality in favor of your position.

All of the above posts are incorrect.

This is the issue that we are currently fighting here at SP. It is a MYTH that backlinks from forums are good for building PR. They are not. You are wasting your time if you are posting rubbish here in the hope that you are building links.

Even more detrimental is the fact that you are losing the benefit of human visitors when you post rubbish. Getting signature exposure is a benefit of forums, but if you post crap then I can tell you that I for one will not be checking out your website!

Hawk,

At first I thought you were referencing everyone in this post but only the ones you quoted. I agree completely. If you have nothing valuable to add to the conversation, then you are short changing yourself and no one can care less about your signature. I notice your passion for telling people not to post anything in SP in hopes of getting a good PR. In the same regard, can you please tell me where you found this information that “it is a MYTH that backlinks from forums are good for building PR”. Most internet marketing gurus and SEO experts tell a different story.

I think you will find that those experts are self proclaimed.

The reason people think they are getting value from posting in forums is because of the PR it builds. If you take a look at the PR of this page (which is 0 - or very near to) and the number of backlinks that that PR is spread across (which are numerous) you’ll see where I’m coming from.

Even the guys that have 10k + posts here and are ‘actual’ SEO experts will agree with me on this one - those post backlinks do next to nothing for their PR. Even 10k x 0 still equals 0.

I think it’s really important that we dispell this myth. It will go a long way towards solving the fluff posting/spam issue that we are currently having. (That and the fact that unless you have 100+ posts your backlinks are nofollow anyway.)

As of when? My nofollow highlight tool doesn’t show that.

Hawk,

Didn’t know this and I may have been guilty of telling a little of this myth. It was explained to me to use signatures only as a way to drive traffic. As far as the page ranking I was told that if it is a high ranking niche forum and the forum adheres to the follow tags then you were sure to accumulate backlinks. As per what your saying, I’ve been mislead. What your saying does makes sense.

I guess the confusion is people are referring to the high page rank from a websites main page not the individual pages which most don’t have ranking. So, how can you get ranking from a page that has no ranking. To ride the coat-tails of a high ranking website you need to be on it’s first page obviously or any of it’s pages that ranks high and they would have to adhere to the follow tags to be able to get credit as a true backlink. Is this correct?

That is more clearer to me now. However as you mentioned, even though the SEO guys and Gurus are self proclaimed experts, their still preaching it differently to the masses. Who do trust to give you the straight facts on this?

AFAIK it has been implimented already, but I may be wrong. If I am, it’s going to happen very soon…

Having said that, you have 100 posts so your links are followed. Or are you talking about other people?

It’s all good. That’s why you come to forums and ask questions! (Not that I am an expert in all things… I just happen to see more forum myths than most people due to the amount of time I spend here!)

100%. You have hit the nail on the head. PR is calculated at a page level, not a site level.

I wish I could answer that. All I can suggest is that you read entire threads before making a judgement, and ask for an explanation (just as you have here). Don’t listen to the people that give one-liners but can’t back it up.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for sharing some useful information on BLs, PR value etc.

I have never had much traffic from either DP or SP :). Well, maybe I post too few :).

Hey I also get more and nice result in back link from signature.
With Sitepoint forum…
