If you’re new to SEO, I’d recommend you to download Google’s Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide, which will give you plenty of sound advice to get you started.

You’ll also want to head over to the Internet Marketing forum, where there are already several threads about how to gain traffic, and all other aspects of SEO. Look around there and read any threads which interest you, especially the “sticky” threads at the top of the forum.
