Hi, I was looking for some advice, if I could register domains for names based on Anime shows for instance without getting in trouble?
You will never get in trouble with domain name, unless you registered trade mark domain name. You may have troubles with web hosting provider. They could be copyright related issues.
Each domain name you are talking about might has a history. And you will never know it.
Other thing Buy domain names on the trusted marketplaces only (SEDO, namepros domainnews forums).
Other: If you are going to create new project netter register new domain name.
The issue here probably would be trademark infringement, rather than copyright.
Jimmy,
If the names you’re after are copyright (and your intent is to capitalize on their copyright value), then you will lose a fight for ownership. If not, anyone challenging your right to own the domain name will lose. (Note: Will is subjective - legally, that’s what should happen but Courts have a tendency to ignore the Law.)

DK
Hi and thank you! Long time reader of the forums. Let me explain my question better actually. If I purchase domains after popular names that are still available, whats the worst hassle they would give me?
Would it be to give up the domain name and do you think it happens a lot in non-selling websites (fan sites, adsense sites)? Thanks
Hello! Welcome to the Sitepoint. Before starting suggesting something for you I would like to ask you about troubles. Which kind of troubles are you expecting?
It’s VERY dangerous to state that you will never get in trouble with a domain when trademarks aside there are other laws which could affect readers.
If domain name was registered and then trade mark appear the truth will be on your side.
I agree with ldcdc, the issue you’re likely to encounter is due to trademarks. If you use the name of a franchise or show created by someone else it may be seen that you are cashing in on the popularity of someone else’s product and it could be deemed that you’re violating that trademark by making yourself out to represent something you have no right too (think of the anti-cybersquatting laws and it could well fall around that region). In many cases, studios are pretty lenient on fan sites (if that’s what you’re intending) as it’s just extra promotion for them, but you need to be VERY careful as they could have your domain taken from you or even pursue you through the courts for compensation for violating their trademark and damaging their business. Though I’m not a lawyer.
