I’m designing the website for my parents’ small farm, Hootnhowlfarm. We’re hosting it at wordpress, but getting kind of frustrated. We’re using the Vigilance theme, but it doesn’t seem to allow us to control some things we’d like to change. For example, we’d like to change the font of the title of the homepage, “Freshest Vegetables, Berries, and Eggs.” I’ve tried using the Sandbox 0.6.1 theme on an experimentation page, but I can’t figure out how to change anything with it. Maybe I need a different webhost, maybe a site builder, maybe just some pointers. I know some HTML, so I wouldn’t want something for a total newbie, but it would be nice if I don’t have to make a forum post for every change I want to make. They just want something simple.
The appearance of the site, pretty much irrespective of what theme you use, is controlled by the CSS stylesheet. In the theme it’s usually called stylesheet.css. That’s where you set things like fonts and colors.
It looks like in order to edit the CSS stylesheet on wordpress, I need to pay for the upgrade. If not, please let me know!
Are you using wordpress.com free hosting? I don’t know about how their pricing works. You can run the Wordpress software, which is free, on normal web hosting and edit any files you want.
Yes, I am using the free hosting. I would have put in the URL but sitepoint.com won’t let me do that until I have made a certain number of forum posts. Is there a free host where I can use the free wordpress software?
Not that you can rely on. If you really want control over your site you’ll have to come up with that $5 per month or so for hosting.
