Adding audio clips to site

One of my clients wants me to add short audio clips to her website. They would be graphics of Chinese characters and when you clicked on them the audio pronunciation would play. They would be very short clips but there would be several (maybe 20) on each page.

What is the best format for this? From the research I’ve done it looks like a wav file would work best. Of course it’s very important that it user-friendly for all.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Use can use some kind of flash media player (this one, for instance - http://flowplayer.org/) with any format that it supports

Well, I don’t think what format you need to use is the most important thing. wav is smaller then mp3, but I think most people will choose rm format, because it has samll size and better quality then other compressed audio format.

If you care of the audio quality, I suggset you to use mp3 format.

And what really interested me is, “They would be graphics of Chinese characters and when you clicked on them the audio pronunciation would play.” What do you plan to make this? I do not think you can do this with a just a simple web player.

I would use MP3 on the basis that it’s the most widely accepted format for use on the web, while WAV is probably going to work with almost every editor it doesn’t have the compression to quality ratio that MP3 offers (WAV is normally just offered as a lossless format). I would also consider using a Flash media player so that your visitors can control the playing of the file when they need it (remember not to have it playing on page loading).

Did you ever figure it out? If not, here is one way… http://www.visibilityinherit.com/code/play-sound-on-mouse-over.php

mp3 would be the way to go if I added audio to my site.

use a free flash player and mp3 files - like any “audio preview” implementation out there.
