A search a website system which doesn't use so much space as Sphider

I put Sphider search on a website years ago. I now realise it’s using about 2GB of HD space in the database. Does anyone know if it’s possible to reduce the amount of space it uses or if there’s another free PHP search I can use which won’t use up so much space?
